Thank you for allowing me to listen to you regarding your support for Brain Tumor Awareness Month. I appreciate you taking time to share your views with me.
Brain tumors can affect any part of the brain and claim nearly 13,000 lives a year. It is estimated that over 43,000 new cases of brain tumors are discovered every year. In spite of recent research, brain tumors are often inoperable and untreatable.
As a physician, I fully understand the suffering and hardship that brain tumors can wreak on individuals and families, and I am committed to working to lessen the impact of this disease. You may be pleased to know that the House of Representatives unanimously passed H. Res. 1124, which would establish a National Brain Tumor Awareness Month last month.
As you may be aware, Senator Ted Kennedy was recently diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. This has drawn media attention to the risks associated with brain tumors, and the ways in which they can be treated. Congress would do well to heed this opportunity to push for new research with the promise of new treatments.
Thank you again for sharing your concerns with me. By working together, we will build a better future for everyone.
Sincerely,
Steve Kagen, MD
Member of Congress
